Fort Wayne, Indiana — According to state and local development sources, Fort Wayne International Airport plans to invest $34,112,094.00 to build out 67,831 square feet of new space in Fort Wayne. The company plans to occupy the new space at 3801 Ferguson Rd in Fort Wayne, on or about December 1, 2024. According to the company website The Fort Wayne-Allen County Airport Authority was created in 1985 and now owns and operates both Fort Wayne International Airport (FWA), which offers commercial passenger, commercial cargo, military, and general aviation operations on the citys Southwest side; and Smith Field Airport (SMD), a general aviation airport on the citys North side. The airport now known as Fort Wayne International Airport was originally named “Baer Field” as a World War II military base. The total cost of the airport in 1941 was $10 million. During World War II more than 100,000 military personnel served at the airport. The military base was made up of more than 100 buildings. Many buildings have since been torn down to allow for parking lot expansion. Following the war, the federal government sold the airport to the city of Fort Wayne for one dollar.
